The US Navy intervened to prevent the Iranian Navy from seizing two oil tankers in separate incidents in the Gulf of Oman on Wednesday. A US defense official confirmed that an Iranian ship fired at the tanker during the second seizure attempt.

In the first incident, an Iranian Navy vessel approached the TRF Moss, a Marshall Islands-flagged oil tanker, in international waters in the Gulf of Oman. The US Navy, accompanied by maritime patrol aircraft, moved in to prevent the seizure. The Iranian vessel changed course and retreated.

Later, another Iranian Navy vessel approached the Richmond Voyager, a different oil tanker, which was farther away from Iranian waters. The Richmond Voyager issued a distress call as the Iranian ship neared it. The US Navy destroyer responded and the Iranian vessel opened fire on the tanker. Fortunately, no one was injured, and the Iranian ship left as the US Navy destroyer approached.

The US Navy did not retaliate, ensuring the safety of its personnel. Rear Adm. Ryan Perry emphasized the importance of their global presence in maintaining the free flow of commerce.

According to the US Navy, Iran has engaged in multiple incidents, harassing or seizing nearly 20 internationally flagged commercial vessels since 2021. These actions pose a significant threat to regional maritime security and the global economy.

Earlier this year, Iran seized two oil tankers within a week in the same region, prompting increased patrols by the US and its partners. The US Navy condemned the seizures, emphasizing the need to deter threats to international shipping in the vital Strait of Hormuz.

The recent incidents underscore the ongoing challenges in the region and the importance of maintaining a strong naval presence to ensure maritime security and protect global trade.
